83-Year-Old Hurleyville Resident Dies After Golf Cart Struck on Route 12
The community of Hurleyville, Sullivan County, is mourning the loss of 83-year-old John R. Nielsen, who was killed in a tragic golf cart crash in the Thousand Islands region on Tuesday afternoon.
According to New York State Police, the crash occurred around 2:45 p.m. on May 12 near Pinehurst Road in Alexandria, Jefferson County, along State Route 12. Investigators said Nielsen was operating a golf cart and attempting to cross the highway from east to west when he was struck by a southbound pickup truck.
Emergency responders transported Nielsen to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased from his injuries.
The driver of the pickup, an 83-year-old man from Pennsylvania, was not injured in the collision.
Authorities said no tickets were issued at the scene and no charges are expected as the investigation continues.
Family, friends, and members of the Hurleyville community are mourning Nielsen’s death, remembering him as a longtime resident whose passing has deeply saddened those who knew him.
New York State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
