Remembering Amelia Reyes Mendoza of Cameron, Texas
The community of Cameron, Texas, is mourning the loss of 68-year-old Amelia Reyes Mendoza, who was killed in a tragic five-vehicle crash Monday morning in Milam County.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), troopers responded around 9 a.m. on May 11 to a crash on U.S. Highway 77 near County Road 203 Loop, where eastbound traffic had been stopped due to a construction flagger as part of a TxDOT pavement project near Cameron. Officials said the roadway was reduced to one lane, with traffic being guided through the work zone by a pilot vehicle.
Investigators said a 2018 Dodge SUV, driven by a 40-year-old man from Killeen, was approaching stopped traffic when the driver failed to control speed and struck the rear of a 2023 Chevrolet SUV that was stopped in line.
Authorities confirmed the driver of the Chevrolet, Amelia Reyes Mendoza of Cameron, was among five people transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple with injuries ranging from non-incapacitating to incapacitating.
DPS said the initial impact triggered a chain-reaction crash involving three additional vehicles. Despite medical treatment, Mendoza later died from her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Four other individuals were also injured in the crash. Next of kin have been notified, according to officials.
The loss has left family, friends, and members of the Cameron community grieving as they remember Mendoza’s life and the impact she had on those who knew her.
Texas DPS continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
